(March 10, 2022) The lighting at Nantucket Elementary School is in violation of multiple outdoor lighting, according to Gail Walker, the head of Nantucket Lights, a nonprofit group dedicated to combating light pollution on the island.

Nantucket Lights hired Keith Yancy of Lam Partners, a firm that specializes in outdoor lighting, to test the school’s lighting and he said he found several violations.

Using a light meter, he said that many of the lights are well above the maximum  allowed under the Nantucket lighting code.

“With illuminance in some areas 58 times that allowed by the Nantucket Code, not only is this lighting contributing to light pollution and light trespass, it is also resulting in the expenditure of much more on electrical bills than necessary for safety and security,” he wrote.
